SFX Translation

Translate manga sound effects like "ドドド" and "バン" alongside regular speech bubbles.

What are SFX?

Sound effects (SFX) in manga are onomatopoeic text representing sounds — "ドドド" (dododo for rumbling), "ザザザ" (zazaza for rain), "バン" (bang). They are often stylized, drawn into the artwork, and not inside standard speech bubbles.

Enabling SFX Translation

Check "Translate SFX" in the General tab of the popup. When enabled, the AI model is instructed to also identify and translate sound effect text in addition to regular speech.

How SFX are Rendered

SFX text gets special bold outline treatment in the overlay rendering. The text uses a stroke + fill technique that creates a thicker, more prominent look matching the visual weight of original SFX.

Limitations

  • SFX heavily integrated into the artwork may not be detected as separate text regions
  • Image swap mode (server/Ollama) handles SFX better since the server can inpaint around the SFX area
  • Overlay mode renders SFX as canvas overlays, which may not blend perfectly with the underlying art
